When’s the best time to travel to Morocco? I get this question all the time.
Many are concerned it’s going to be too hot to do anything. What’s the point of going across the Atlantic if you’ll be stuck inside all day?
While it can be hot in Morocco, there are times of the year when the weather’s much cooler. We tell our clients about a few specific time windows that are perfect for international travellers.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- The best months for weather, comfort, and experience
- When to avoid Morocco, and why
- How timing impacts hotels, pricing, and your overall trip
Timing Can Make or Break Your Morocco Trip
A client once told me about a friend from Miami who planned his own trip to Morocco.
He booked a beautiful-looking riad (a traditional house with a courtyard), reserved a few restaurants and checked the weather quickly. Apparently, it was going to be warm. He liked warm weather so that sounded good to him.
Arriving in Marrakech in mid-August, he soon realized something was wrong. The heat was unbearable.
Walking outside felt like stepping into a sauna – and that was before he even reached the Sahara! He ended up staying inside most of the trip.
I see people making these kinds of mistakes more often than you might think.
If you’re thinking about late June, July, or August – my advice is don’t!
What the Perfect Morocco Trip Actually Feels Like
Let’s flip this.
Imagine this instead:
After you land in Morocco, you’re greeted by a warm breeze. Then you take a walk through the medina, without rushing, and enjoy the scent of the spices as they permeate the air.
After, you sit by the pool at your riad, taking your time. You’re struck by a sense of peace and presence – that’s what the right timing gives you.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: Morocco is actually one of the best winter destinations in the world.
Winter (January – February): Quiet Luxury and Perfect Touring Weather
Temperatures are mild and comfortable:
- Marrakech: ~18–22°C (64–72°F)
- Fez: ~15–20°C (59–68°F)
- Sahara: ~17–21°C (63–70°F) daytime, cooler at night
In winter, rain is minimal. According to World Bank climate data, Marrakech averages 5-7 days of rain at most per month in winter.
That means most days are clear, which makes it perfect for exploring.
And the nights? That’s where the magic happens.
Imagine this:
You come back from dinner and the air is crisp. You open the door to your room at the five star La Sultana and the fireplace is already lit. The glow is soft and it invites you to slow down.
That moment stays with you.
Spring (March – Early June): Morocco at Its Absolute Best
This is peak season – and for good reason.
- Marrakech: ~22–30°C (72–86°F)
- Fez: ~20–28°C (68–82°F)
- Sahara: ~25–35°C (77–95°F)
The weather is almost perfect. It’s warm enough for the pool yet cool enough to explore.
I’ve personally hosted hundreds of travelers during this period. It’s when Morocco feels alive. Gardens bloom in these months and the light is softer. The cities feel vibrant.
One of my favorite memories is of a guest stepping into a riad in Fes for the first time. As the doors open, the scent of orange blossom fills the air. Water trickles from the fountain. She told me she was stunned in silence for a good minute or two.
That’s Morocco.

Summer (Late June – August): When Not to Visit Morocco
Let’s debunk a common myth:
“Morocco is like Miami. I don’t mind the heat.”
But the heat at this time of the year can be unbearable.
Temperatures in Marrakech regularly exceed 38°C (100°F) in July and August. In all honesty, it feels way hotter than Miami. Because the cities are built with stone, the heat lingers, even at night.
I’ve had clients insist on coming in August. Every single time, they tell me the same thing after:
“We should have listened.”
Fall (September – December): A Second Window of Perfection
This is one of my favorite times. In the fall, temperatures in most of the major cities are still warm but not too hot:
- Marrakech: ~25–32°C (77–90°F) in early fall, cooling later
- Fez: ~22–30°C (72–86°F)
- Sahara: warm days, cooler nights
It’s calmer than spring but still beautiful and often better value.
Just keep in mind that during some of the major holidays, many luxury hotels require minimum stays and rates also go up.
Why Choosing the Right Time Feels So Confusing
Here’s the problem:
Morocco is a big country with many different climates.
It stretches from the cooler coastal cities to the Sahara. Then there are the Atlas Mountains and the inland cities. Each area has its own geography and climate.
One of our most popular tours (the 10-night luxury Morocco tour) visits all these places in one trip.
Many travelers might look at a weather chart for just one of these places and think it’s fine.
I can tell you now, that chart won’t tell you how it feels walking through the souks of Fes at noon or crossing the desert at sunset.
That’s where people get it wrong. I’ve seen it countless times.
The Real Answer? It Depends on the Experience You Want
There is no single “best” time to visit Morocco. There’s only the best time for you.
What are you looking for? Many of our clients are looking for one or more of the following:
- Cultural exploration
- Poolside relaxation
- Cultural immersion
- Desert adventure
- Beach time
Depending on what you want from your trip, the answer to this question will vary, sometimes dramatically.
Here’s what most people miss:
Even in the “right” month, a poorly planned trip can fail. That’s because of wrong pacing, staying in the wrong hotels or having the wrong flow.
I’ve seen trips in perfect weather feel exhausting and off-season trips feel incredible.
Ultimately, it all comes down to how you design your trip.

Final Thoughts: Timing Is Everything But Even, Planning is Required
Timing matters. But that’s only part of the story.
With the right planning, Morocco becomes something else entirely.
Morocco needs to be something you experience fully, not just something you check off your list. Not only choosing the right time of year for your needs, but also making sure you plan your trip well makes all the difference.
